2022 Hobnobben Film Festival Friday Schedule
October 13 - 16, 2022
Friday: 11:00 AM - 12:45 PM • Main Theater
Human Stories
These shorts highlight the kaleidoscope of life’s experiences. A Chinese immigrant shares her struggles in the white-male-dominated art world in Indiana; an independent wrestler vows to do better; a tattoo parlor donates its services to help people overcome trauma; a young woman competes for her own personal record in the Paralympics; and a rickshawali in Delhi must work to support her family.
Friday: 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM • Spectator Lounge
Black Daddy: The Movie
Unadulterated storytelling from the Black father’s point of view. All too often, we assume that Black fathers are not involved in their children’s lives. In this compelling feature film, the director follows the lives of a few like-minded men as they tell stories of joy, pain, and the complexity of what it means to be a Black father in America.
Friday: 1:15 PM - 2:30 PM • Spectator Lounge
Older and Wiser
Life isn’t over until it’s over. Senior stories have much to teach about life and love, like how breakups can be rough – especially when you must accept a new reality after being married for decades. These short films tell nuanced stories of life through the ages because life doesn’t end after your 20s, and neither should acting careers! From the lighthearted The Accidental Grandson to the heartbreaking Mireyita, which depicts an aunt's forlorn hope to bring her family back together, this block of films stunningly showcases an often overlooked perspective.
Friday: 1:00 PM - 3:15 PM • Main Theater
All There is to Sea
The tradition of fishing and the art of aquatic life dates back hundreds of years. Through these three films, we discover the challenges, craftsmanship, and dedication involved in protecting our waters as well as creating a sustainable livelihood. Each film will enthrall you with its storytelling and breathtaking scenery.
Please join us for a panel discussion following the block.
Friday: 2:45 PM - 4:15 PM • Spectator Lounge
Abandoned Worlds
What would happen if everything in the world as we know it stopped and the economy ceased to function? In Dreaming an Island, the remaining inhabitants of the Japanese island of Ikeshima work to find normality while living in a surreal setting. In Where They Drag the Boats, a young girl lives her life in an empty, post-apocalyptic world alone with a cassette player.
Friday: 3:30 PM - 4:45 PM • Main Theater
Queering Life, Globally
Queer Theory: [These Films] Explore the oppressive power of dominant norms, particularly those relating to sexuality and the immiseration they cause to those who cannot, or do not wish to, live according to those norms.
Friday: 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM • Main Theater
Black Motherhood
The mainstream Motherhood narrative is incomplete, especially for women of color. Reclaiming Power: The Black Maternal Crisis is a documentary-dance film that highlights the challenging and positive experiences Black women have, particularly when choosing out-of-hospital birthing options, like at home or in birthing centers. Hollow follows the journey of Black women toward motherhood as they try to conceive. These stories take a closer look at the nuances of stigma, shame, heartbreak, and hope.
Please join us for a panel discussion following the block. Panelists will include: Jada Burtin, Angelica Robinson Pickens, Heather Gatson, Taylor Banks, and Asha Bailey.
Friday: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM • Spectator Lounge & Main Theater
Awards Ceremony & Sweet Disaster
Awards Ceremony: 7:00 PM - 7:30 PM • Spectator Lounge
Come do a little “hobnobbing” in the Spectator Lounge before the Awards Ceremony. It’s your chance to meet filmmakers and friends, enjoy some snacks, pose for selfies, and make a stop or two at the cash bar.
Sweet Disaster: 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM • Main Theater
After the ceremony, settle back in the main theater for our feature film, Sweet Disaster, a refreshing rom-com about a 40-year-old woman who unexpectedly gets pregnant and then dumped by the father of the child.
Join us after the film for a pre-recorded Q&A with director Laura Lehmus.
